The Butcher, the Baker, the Candlestick Maker: Community Rolls Up Its Sleeves for Health — Scenes from a Rotary Immunization Fair

With the start of school just around the corner, the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker . . . or at least today’s equivalents . . . all pitched in to get the children of Southwest Houston vaccinated and give them a helping hand in buying school supplies at Bellaire Rotary’s July 22nd Gulfton Immunization Clinic and Health Fair. The funding? Bellaire Southwest Rotary Club. The labor? Business executives, doctors, dentists, nurses, policemen, lawyers, bank presidents, politicians, clergy — working side-by-side screening medical records, entertaining children, giving shots, teaching good health practices, preparing food, cleaning up. The beneficiaries? You. Me. The uninsured.

“Providing free inoculations with school supply vouchers for families is a signature activity of our club,” said Bellaire Southwest Rotary president elect Nan Wagoner. “But every single citizen benefits by an improved immunization coverage-level, which lowers the risk of catching infectious disease from unvaccinated carriers,” she added.

Bellaire Rotary expanded its back-to-school immunization this year with more health fair activities, including inducting participants into a “Clean Hands Club,” screening a wide range of infectious disease prevention films for parents (with cartoons for the kids), and featuring information tables from area health providers. Washable tattoos, refreshments, and ‘goody bags’ were a hit last year and made an encore appearance.

“We’re surrounded by the 4th largest city in the country, but when it comes to health, small-town neighborliness works pretty well here in Bellaire,” said Rotary vice president and Bellaire City Manager Bernie Satterwhite.

Women have been waiting for The Me AgainÂ? Kit, I know, I was one of them.”
